The NFL trade deadline (November 1) is less than a week away and the Kansas City Chiefs could be a team that makes some moves.
Pro Football Focus NFL insider Doug Kyed reported this week that the Chiefs, along with the Green Bay Packers and the Los Angeles Rams, have “shown interest in the wide receiver market”.
According to Kyed, the three wide receivers generating the most buzz right now are the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ Chase Claypool, Houston Texans‘ Brandin Cooks and Denver Broncos‘ Jerry Jeudy. I like the idea of Jeudy in the Chiefs’ offense with Mahomes, but trading for Cooks, who is 29 years old, might be the safest bet.
Cooks isn’t Tyreek Hill, but he can still stretch the field. And he’s been pretty consistent throughout his career.
Cooks has gone over 1,000 receiving yards in all but two seasons since entering the NFL in 2014. Pairing him with Mahomes could lead to the best stretch of Cooks’ career.
According to Kyed, it would likely cost a day two pick to get Cooks, Jeudy or Claypool. If the Chiefs are looking to take their offense to the next level, trading for Cooks might be an ideal scenario. He’s older so he’d likely be a bit cheaper than Jeudy or Claypool.
The only problem with trading for Cooks is that he’s under contract through 2024 and has a cap hit of $26 million in 2023 and $24 million in 2024. Kansas City might not want to commit to that large of a cap hit. But if they’re OK with taking on that salary, then Cooks would be a solid addition to an already potent offense.
