Matthew Stafford Makes a Likely Career Decision in 2-Words

Matthew Stafford has had a roller coaster ride since joining the Los Angeles Rams in the 2021 offseason. He won the Super Bowl with the Rams in his first season at SoFi Stadium.

But his second season has been plagued with injury concerns. After his season ended prematurely due to a spinal cord contusion, there has been a constant curiosity about the veteran signal caller’s future in the NFL.

He has made a likely career decision. Stafford has a two-word response to the question about retiring from the league. The Rams placed Stafford on the injured reserve list after his injury. And they have already signed his replacement in Baker Mayfield.

Matthew Stafford has made up his mind

It looks like Matthew Stafford has already made up his mind about his future as an NFL player. Speaking on the topic on his wife Kelly Stafford’s podcast ‘The Morning After’, Stafford gave the answer in just two words.

“Oh no,” the veteran QB said when Kelly asked him if he is going to retire. Kelly said that she has been saying it already, but nobody listens to her. So, it is good to hear it from the QB himself.

Stafford is on a four-year, 160-million contract with the Rams. The veteran QB has been a great servant of the game all these years. But it would be interesting to see if the Rams continue with Stafford next season or give a new shot to their new signing Baker Mayfield.

Stafford has had a great career since bursting onto the scene back in 2009. But who will foot his huge contract if the reigning Super Bowl champions decide to go with Mayfield next season?

A good servant of the game

Matthew Stafford started his NFL journey after the Detroit Lions picked him up as the first overall pick of the 2009 NFL draft. He became an instant starter at Ford Field and remained so till the end of the 2020 season.

During the 2021 offseason, the Lions traded Stafford to the Rams in exchange for QB Jared Goff and multiple future draft picks.

And he led the Rams to a Super Bowl win over the Cincinnati Bengals to cap his first season in Los Angeles. His second season did not go as he would have liked as he was troubled by constant injuries. He last played in the league in the Week 11 matchup against the New Orleans Saints back in November.

The Rams will not feature in the postseason this time around, becoming the first team to miss out on playoffs post the Super Bowl-winning season since the 2016 Denver Broncos. It is good to hear that Stafford will continue his stellar career. All that remains to be seen is where he will signal plays next season.
