Matt LaFleur says it will be hard to root against one Lions player on Sunday

When the Green Bay Packers play the Detroit Lions on Sunday night, there’s one opposing player that Matt LaFleur is going to have a hard time rooting against.

LaFleur admitted to reporters on Wednesday that he’s still a big fan of former Packers running back Jamaal Williams.

Green Bay’s head coach, however, has promised to find a way to root against him on Sunday night.

LaFleur said he’s going to “try to find it in my body” to root against Williams while noting that he still enjoys watching former Green Bay running back’s dances after touchdowns.

He just doesn’t want to see this team week — at least not during the game.

Williams played for the Packers from 2017 to 2020, which means he played for LaFleur for two seasons.

The former BYU standout signed a two-year deal with the Lions ahead of the 2021 season.

Williams is currently in the midst of the best season of his career. So far this season, Williams has 994 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. He also has 12 receptions for 73 yards (oddly enough, this will be Williams’ least productive season as a pass catcher).

There’s a chance that the game between Green Bay and Detroit will be a “winner gets into the playoffs” game.

If the Los Angeles Rams beat the Seattle Seahawks, then the winner of Packers/Lions gets into the playoffs. If the Rams lose to Seattle, then Detroit will be eliminated.

Green Bay would still need to beat the Lions to get in if the Seahawks beat the Rams (if Seattle wins and the Packers lose, then the Seahawks get in).

I’m guessing it won’t be too difficult for LaFleur to root against Williams once the game gets underway on Sunday night.
