The Boston Red Sox certainly have had an interesting offseason.
The Red Sox have made some intriguing moves but one more they could make that could put themselves into World Series contention is swinging a massive deal for Cleveland Guardians Shane Bieber.
Boston has had a roller coaster of an offseason losing longtime shortstop Xander Bogaerts in free agency to the San Diego Padres but has also locked up star third baseman Rafael Devers to the largest deal in team history and signed Masataka Yoshida, Kenley Jansen, and Justin Turner.
The starting rotation is the next area for the team to address after having one of the weakest groups in 2022. Boston has an intriguing group heading into 2023 with Chris Sale, Corey Kluber, James Paxton, Brayan Bello, Garrett Whitlock, and Tanner Houck all fighting for spots but the team also has been looking outside of the organization for another arm to add.
Boston has been heavily tied to the Miami Marlins as they have plenty of arms available but one other option the team could take if they wanted to opt for a big move would be swinging a deal for the Guardians Ace.
While Boston’s connection with Miami has been heavily reported, a deal involving Bieber would be much more of a pipe dream.
The 2020 American League Cy Young winner is still under team control for the next two seasons so any deal would likely be a major haul, but if Boston is serious about its commitment to winning, Bieber certainly is a player to take a second look at.
It wouldn’t be too out of the realm of possibility for Cleveland to deal Bieber as it dealt fellow star hurlers Mike Clevinger, Carlos Carrasco, Trevor Bauer, and even Kluber before they hit free agency.
If Boston were to swing a deal for Bieber it likely would cost a treasure trove of top prospects — like Triston Casas — and Major League Baseball talent but with the Red Sox’s farm system’s drastic improvement they could meet any asking price.
After inking Devers to a massive deal Boston is in win-now mode so maybe Bieber would be a perfect option to consider. A deal for Bieber isn’t likely at this moment, but it certainly would amazing for Red Sox Nation.
