Ten years ago, on Jan. 4, 2013, the Kansas City Chiefs hired Andy Reid as head coach — one of the best moves in franchise history.

After finishing the 2012 season with a 2-14 record, Kansas City fired head coach Romeo Crennel. Days later, the Chiefs hired Reid, who has never had a losing season in Kansas City.

Kansas City gave Reid a five-year deal that included authority over all football decisions, his agent, Bob LaMonte, told USA Today at the time.

“You’ve got a man who was chief cook and bottle-washer for so many years,” LaMonte said. “He’s used to that. At the end of the day, you want to keep that up.”

This year, Reid has the Chiefs at 13-3 heading into the final game of the regular season. He has a five-game winning streak in each of his 10 years at the helm, and the Chiefs have won the division seven straight seasons.

In the 10 seasons before Reid, the Chiefs had six losing seasons. Kansas City made the playoffs three times, all under different coaches — Dick Vermeil in 2003, Herm Edwards in 2006 and Todd Haley in 2010.

Heading into the offseason in 2013, the Chiefs were coming off five losing seasons in a six-year span.

When Reid was hired, he said the team needed to find a QB like Len Dawson, who had led the Chiefs to their only two Super Bowl appearances.

In February 2013, the Chiefs traded for QB Alex Smith, who helped Kansas City get back on track.

In the 2015 playoffs, Smith led the team to its first postseason win in 22 years, a 30-0 victory over the Houston Texans. But the Chiefs couldn’t get over the hump to the Super Bowl with Smith.

In 2017, the Chiefs drafted Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and one season later, he took over for Smith.

In 2019, Reid and Mahomes brought a championship back to Kansas City with a 31-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV. It was Reid’s first Super Bowl title after 21 seasons as a head coach in the NFL.
